This bust of Nelson is one of a number of Parian ware pieces at the Spode Museum.
Parian ware (after Paros, where Ancient Greek marble was quarried) is a form of unglazed porcelain which resembles fine marble.
Numerous statuary objects were made in Parian during the Victorian period in other Staffordshire factories, notably Minton, but those made at Copeland are considered the best.
The Spode Museum contains various Copeland Parian statuary pieces, including historical and mythological figures, animals and birds.
